For many leaders in investment banking and financial services, success is typically assessed through metrics such as completed transactions, capital allocation, and the long-term performance of the businesses they advise. For Steven H. Nigro, Managing Partner of TAG Financial Institutions Group, LLC, four decades advising middle-market mergers and acquisitions (M&A) transactions across the insurance, securities, and banking industries inspired a different question: “What comes after professional success?”
The answer became Tu Lucha Rising, a nonprofit founded with his wife, Jin, which reflects their shared belief that purpose beyond financial success creates the greatest return. “If we could change one life, that would be enough. And I sense we might do more than that,” he says. Their mission centers on empowering underserved youth through sport, using boxing as a vehicle to teach discipline, resilience, and opportunity, while demonstrating how wealth as a force for good can create lasting community impact.
Building a Lasting Legacy Beyond the Boardroom
Nigro’s professional career spans more than 40 years in investment banking, corporate governance, and financial leadership. Having completed more than 600 transactions while advising financial institutions on M&As, capital raising, and strategic growth, he has spent decades helping organizations create long-term value. Reflecting on their careers shortly before the pandemic, Nigro and his wife recognized how fortunate they had been. “We started to reflect on our life together,” he shares. “That thought then pivoted to, ‘How do we give back?’.”
For Nigro, boxing had already transformed his own life. Introduced to the sport by his son after years of neglecting his health, he discovered far more than physical fitness. “I learned something about the boxing community,” he says. “There were no masters or kings. no “haves”, or “have nots”, no race or religion, no bankers or lawyers. There is only a strong community that is self-supportive”. That sense of equality and shared purpose became the foundation for building a lasting legacy through an organization designed to provide young people with the same supportive environment that had shaped his own journey.
Boxing Creates More Than Athletes
Tu Lucha Rising uses boxing as a framework for mentoring the next generation of leaders, helping young people develop habits that extend well beyond the ring. After witnessing the work of Ironbound Boxing Academy in Newark, New Jersey, where Jin currently sits on the board, he saw firsthand how structured athletic programs could safely guide children from school into an environment focused on accountability, respect, and personal development.
“What you learn in this gym is not only going to be about boxing,” he says. “It’s going to be about the other things that are really important in being successful and happy.” He recognized a natural alignment between business and sport, where success in both is shaped by consistency, preparation, resilience, and disciplined execution under pressure.
How a Power Couple Built a Legacy Together
The organization’s growth has also become a case study in how power couples build legacy by combining complementary strengths. Jin’s background as a technology executive and attorney brings operational discipline, while Steven contributes strategic vision and decades of executive leadership. “We’re very different,” Nigro says. “I’m a storyteller. She’s a driver. She gets things done.” To keep their growing family office and nonprofit aligned, they established what they call a weekly “power hour,” a structured business meeting with clear agendas and accountability.
That partnership has strengthened both the organization and their relationship, allowing each to leverage their professional expertise toward a common purpose. Following Jin’s retirement from Google, she has taken the lead full time, helping expand Tu Lucha Rising’s mission while reinforcing the principles of sound leadership, governance, and long-term execution that have defined both of their careers.
Alongside the nonprofit sits Tu Lucha Pro, which sponsors professional boxers who serve as visible examples for younger participants entering the program. One such athlete maintained contact with the Nigro’s after receiving a scholarship through Ironbound Boxing. “He wrote us and said, ‘You told me to keep in touch. Well, I’ve turned pro, and I was hoping that you might consider sponsoring me.’ we told him that he did his part so we were going to do ours.”
Tu Lucha Rising represents the next chapter in turning business success into social impact. It demonstrates how purpose-driven wealth, thoughtful leadership, and a commitment to community can build a legacy measured not only in transactions completed, but in lives changed.
