T’Juana Albert: The Missing Perspective – Black Women in Legal and Compliance

T’Juana Albert helps technology companies grow with confidence. She leads business integration, legal operations, and compliance strategy, transforming complex challenges into streamlined, scalable solutions that fuel sustainable growth. As Vice President of Business Integration and Assurance at GumGum, she earned a reputation as the company’s “Swiss Army Knife,” a nod to her ability to bring clarity and cohesion to the moving parts of high-growth technology environments.

With more than 25 years of experience scaling early stage and rapidly expanding tech companies, Albert has delivered incredible results, from multimillion-dollar cost reductions to double-digit efficiency gains. With a reputation that precedes her and a portfolio of accomplishments most would dream to have under their belt, Albert shares how representation and diversity have shaped her journey and why they matter for the future of legal and compliance. “Representation has been the most powerful tool I’ve carried throughout my career,” Albert explains. “Especially as a Black woman in legal and compliance, visibility creates possibility. You can’t be what you can’t see.”

Visibility Creates Possibility

Albert’s rise in the legal and compliance sectors came during a time when few women of color, and even fewer Black women, held senior operational roles. That absence of representation can subtly limit ambition. “Early in my career, I rarely saw Black women in leadership roles. That lack of visibility shrinks what we believe is possible for ourselves,” she shares. Sharing her story now is not a matter of self-promotion but one of purpose; she wants to encourage other women in the field to tell their stories, amplifying their journeys so others can see what is truly possible for them. “Visibility is a form of empowerment,” she says. “When people see someone who looks like them leading, it reframes what success can look like.”

Her initiative, Suits & Pajamas, a podcast and leadership platform, brings that philosophy to life, featuring industry leaders and emerging voices who share real stories about navigating leadership, inclusion, and personal growth. Through candid conversations about resilience, authenticity, and balance in the modern workplace, Albert invites leaders to embrace both ambition and humanity in their pursuit of success.

Redefining Authority and Value

For her, leadership begins with redefining what authority looks like in spaces where bias still lingers. “Too often, Black women are expected to prove it twice,” she says. “I’ve learned to turn that pressure into an advantage.” Never one to shrink from a challenge, Albert has consistently turned obstacles into opportunities. At GumGum, a contextual intelligence company that uses AI to power privacy-first digital advertising, she spearheaded a company-wide business integration initiative that delivered a 17%  increase in efficiency while leading cross-functional teams across legal, compliance, IT, and internal audit. Her ability to connect strategy with execution made her a driving force behind operational excellence and growth. Her leadership has been recognized across the media and adtech industries, earning her recognition as a Top Woman in Media & AdTech: Privacy Powerhouse in 2024.

Thought each stage of her careers. she has transformed bias into a catalyst for growth. In doing so, she challenges preconceptions and reshapes how competence is perceived. “Bringing structure and measurable outcomes builds trust,” she explains. “It also changes the narrative around what leadership looks like.”

Building Cultures Where Equity is the Standard

While Albert’s own success and commitment to sharing her journey has inspired countless young women to challenge assumptions and lead with confidence, she knows that one success story alone is not enough. The next step is systemic: true change comes from embedding equity into the operating model of a business. “Empowerment isn’t a solo act; it’s a system,” she says. “Change sticks when it’s systemic.”

At GumGum, that philosophy is visible in the company’s operational decisions. Albert has helped weave principles of equity, inclusion, and belonging into the organization’s compliance and governance framework, ensuring that inclusion is not an afterthought but an integral part of how the business scales. “Authenticity should be celebrated,” she adds. “When teams can show up as themselves, they perform better, innovate faster, and stay longer.”

Unlocking Power, Not Handing It Over

The conversation about representation in legal and compliance must focus on building space for more backgrounds to shine. “Black women in compliance and legal fields are here and we’re ready,” she affirms. “We don’t need permission. We need platforms, partnerships, and purpose. Let’s build them together.” Her career reflects that conviction: operational excellence paired with inclusive leadership. Through every merger, compliance framework, or strategic integration she leads, Albert is not only shaping better business outcomes, she’s expanding what’s possible for those who follow.
